Yea, Yea, I know- its been a while, right?

Sorry about that.

Honestly, music has become pretty boring for me. Not boring as in I no longer listen, but this moist, continual advance into the homosexual has drained my desire to enjoy the culture and musical artform I have enjoyed the majority of my life.

With that being said, it also took me away from my writing.

So yea, sorry. Seriously.

Ok, now that that is out of the way, I’d like to talk about why I’m here. I was giving a task by one of my twitter followers: what are the best 5 Fifty Cent songs ever… and of COURSE I had to go overboard. I’ve never made any real secret of my preference for Curtis’ music- I identified with his music and continue to do so. That being said, my challenge was to delve into his immense (4 solo, 2 group, 25 G-Unit Radios, 8 G-Unit Tapes, Whoo Kid Exclusives, 8 Solo mixtapes, his Demo, and numerous loose songs over a 10 year career) catalogue in order to rank the top 100 songs of the mans career. I will most likely come back to this list to add rationale and a download link for all these songs for those interested in the read, but I figured I would up the list. If you’ve never heard some of these, let me know and I will get them up a little faster.

The following is a random twitter conversation sparked by a retweet into my TL of Young Guru expressing his excitement of music from a “project” produced by one Justin Blaze… Much like others on my TL, I expressed my dissatisfaction with the actual lack of released music from said “project“— And here is when all hell broke loose on my TL.

I screen shotted all the tweets, so I apologize if they are out of order. This damn convo actually took place over two fucking days, as apparently I touched a nerve with the Grammy-award winning producer, as even sleep and a shopping holiday wasn’t enough to stop the homie, as he continued this conversation over the course of a another day.

I’m not gonna go into this more- I’ll let you make your own decision on who is “right”— All I’m saying is that on Dec 26 it will officially be 3 years since Act II’s announced release date…

Far too often these days the term “5 star match” gets thrown around carelessly. When I think of a 5 star match the Flair/Steamboat series comes to mind first. Then Austin vs Bret at Wrestlemania 13. Those are certified classics that should be required viewing for any wrestling fan. Those are the measuring sticks by which I judge the quality of matches. This match right here, is another.

When people think of women’s wrestling they unfortunately think of the current product the WWE & TNA push. Bikini models & former fitness competitors looking to cash in on their looks & limited athletic ability. It’s like GLOW only slightly better…or worse depending on your tastes. Sure there are real talents like Natalya, Beth Phoenix & Gail Kim in the mix but they’re the saving graces. The women featured in this video would fall under the category of world class performers.

Sit back & enjoy one of the best wrestling matches ever. Notice I didn’t qualify it by saying its one of the best women’s matches you’ll see. This match rivals anything you’d see the men do. In fact, for you fanboys that thought that Elgin vs Richards was 5 stars, watch this & watch that & tell me which had better atmosphere & finish.

“Newport Music” was conceived by the incomparable Brian Ennals and Producer Alpha Davis, who are both part of the Zipsquad. Brian released an project 3 years ago (I know) called “Untitled” that you can download HERE and you can check out some “Loosies” out of the Candy Cigarettes pack on his Soundcloud HERE.

Earlier today, Rob Markman (@RobMarkman) of MTV News/ former XXL Music Music Editor tweeted that he would take a listen to any song sent to him for the next hour. Normally, these type of things amount to nothing, but with the acclaim the Zipsquad homie Brian Ennals has been receiving around the internets for his newest Single, “Newport Music,” I decided to see if he would actually take a listen, as I (rightfully, after checking his TL) assumed he would be getting a ton of music sent his way. After inadvertently clicking on a Slaughter House song and ~~succumbing to sleep-inducing boredom~~ take a nap, woke up pleasantly surprised to not only have received a response, but also so great feedback, and even a retweet!

So, props to Rob for taking a listen and giving independent artists so shine, and props to Brian and Alpha for putting together something special for the upcoming “Candy Cigarettes” project!

In Nore’s Verse, he makes the curious non sequitur (See Below)- The visual itself being hilarious, but the implications (Why did Nore have on a Camron shirt? Why was he doing cartwheels? Why the fuck was he on Soul Train?) led me to pose the question on my Twitter feed as I traveled to pick up my yung buls from Chicago. Being that I’m a real nigga, I @’d Noreaga, not because I expected (or even wanted) an answer, but because theres no reason to speak on someone on twitter and not let them know they were mentioned. Imagine my surprise when Nore ACTUALLY answered the question! (See Below)

His answer of course, led me to #2…

2. Why the FUCK was Cam on Soul Train cartwheeling in a N.O.R.E T-Shirt???!!!!! This is obviously pre-Diplomats, but Jimmy Jones was around, but still I find it hard to imagine these two niggas doing a floor routine to Horse & Carriage while (RIP) don cornelius judged form and content from the middle of the damned Soul Train line. Was he wearing a throwback Superthug Jersey? I’m so confused, which of COURSE led me to question number 3…

Struggle raps - and for once, I mean that in a good way. A lotta emotion in this one, then again that’s what Philly niggas do when it comes to this rap shit. That could be a good or bad thing, but in this case I’m going with the former.

The song aside, the video is really good. A lot of the same shit we’ve seen before, but it’s really well shot and I dig the treatment. I’m kinda embarrassed to admit that I’m actually waiting on the cliffhanger resolution from the end of a rap video. LOLs. Will any of the Polo by Ralph Lauren apparel get splattered with blood?

Three Things I Think about: 50 Cent- New Day (Ft. Dr. Dre & Alicia Keys) (Street King Immortal, Nov 2012)

1. Its “Stadium Music”- that new nebulous category that contains everything from Eminem’s awful Recovery Album to Blouse & CamelGOATs collaborative project, Watch The Throne, and every artist currently making plans to rock out 20K people a night. Short on lyrics, high on “lighter waving” moments, this new cinematic form of rap music is now the wave for any mainstream artist in that rarified category Curtis is in.

2. That being said, I don’t know if I like it. After dropping consistently good-to-brilliant street music with Big 10, Lost Tapes, and 5 (Murder By Numbers) that I almost can’t be upset that he dropped this. Its not really for me, as Alicia (imitating Rihanna), Dr. Dre (imitating a competent rapper), and Curtis (imitating a life coach) all drop Lean on Me bars over a Dre/Swizz/Eminem monstrosity that has Jimmy “Interscope” Iovine written all over it- not a good thing. One thing I’ve learned about Kizza’s though, is that they LOVE this type of music, and judging by how well its doing on iTunes, this seems to be exactly what Curtis needed to re-enter the marketplace.

3. I really hope his whole album isn’t like this. I know it won’t be, but still… Just. No. People complain that 50 Cent doesn’t rap about anything different, but this shit has all the makings of his version of Kingdom Come, and I’m not trying to hear my favorite rapper talk about his good credit.

Three Things I Think About: Brian Ennals- “Newport Music” (Candy Cigarettes, 2012)

Disclosure:

Man, niggas been waiting on Brian to drop this damn Candy Cigarettes for so long its almost became the Zipsquad version of Act II- thankfully, he’s almost finished with the project and has officially released the first single, Newport Music, produced by the Zipsquad’s own Alpha Davis (Dallas Lifestyle Music EP). I’ve had his first version of this on repeat for so long that I was taken aback by some of the changes he made in the delivery, so I thought it would be dope to do a “Three Things” on the song.

1. He added significantly more melody to the final version, which took me some getting used to- I think the delivery of this version is far doper when listening in headphones, but it will be interesting to hear it in the whip, as I wonder how it will translate to Car speakers.

2. This song is so fucking smooth, and with Brian representing the “everyman” in his music, it just works- listen to his verse on Spitgame’s “Revolutionary Warfare” - where he mentions “fucking wack broads and going to work when [He] feels like it.” “Newport Music” is no different, as he proclaims his life to be nothing but “smoking weed, jerking off, and dismantling beats.” He literally created the regular nigga version of “Maybach Music.”

3. Those horns man… I really hope Alpha did more work with Brian. His Texas sound really fits with Brian’s voice, and I think it brings out the best in Brian’s music.

So fucking smooth! The first leak off his upcoming mixtape/street album, Sex, Drugs, & Hip-Hop, Yayo heads out to the Bay to grab the OG Todd Shaw for a really dope collaboration. For those not in the know, Marvin tends to have really good (and often unexpected) collaborations on his project— say what you want, but he brought Danny Brown and Lil B to the East Coast (and even put them niggas on the same song, “Trap Ball”, which is seriously my favorite song of the last 5 years) before ANYONE else thought about collabing with them. Hell, just take a look at the track list for SD&HH:

Muthafucking Bun B? Slim Thug? Gucci Mane? When’s the last time a New York artist did tracks with these legends? Man, ya’ll got me bent— Marvin has CONSISTENTLY released the BEST G-Unit Projects (Gunpowder Guru, Hawaiian Snow, Swine Flu 1&2) over the last few years! With the release of 5 (Murder By Numbers), Lloyd Banks’ excellent V6: The Gift, and now this project, maybe Curtis’ goal of having his artist obtain career independence will be more than just blog gossip fodder.

Or not.

Still, look out for Sex Drugs & Hip-Hop coming soon, hopefully with a production list as well.

Man, songs like this make me wish we would ever get a Hawaiian Snow 2, which was EASILY one of my favorite releases of the last few years, for a couple of reasons. This sounds like something that was on the cutting room floor of that project, and whenever a rapper throws in a Silk Da Shocker reference, your always in for a treat. El Chapo 2 wasn’t nearly as cohesive as the Beat Bucha/Ty Fyffe (sp?)-helmed original (which contained Perfect Push-up P’s best verse outside of Black Devils in 2011), but it did contain a few gems, including “In My Life,” “Flexxin,” and “Shame On A Nigga.”

According to Yayo’s Twitter, Sex, Drugs, and Hip-Hop is his next project, and it will be interesting to see how he moves after Curtis’ revelations and his excellent guest work on Big 10.

Three Things I Think: Come And Catch Me- Young Buck Ft. Allstar & Lil Scrappy (Gangsta Grillz-Case Dismissed: An Introduction to G-Unit South)

1. One thing a lot of people tend to forget in David’s incredible fall from grace is that he is a REALLY good rapper— engaging, witty, and more than capable of holding a listeners attention. He had all the tools, and FAR too much access to cocaine, apparently, smh.

2. Can you imagine if he would have actually had the business acumen to maintain a G-Unit South and the talent he could have/ did amass? BG, Scrappy (pre-reality show), All-Star, Lil Murda, and Hi-C??? I’d take the last three over any of these newer rappers currently making trap music now. People often ignore the absolute chemistry all these artists showed on the records they did together, smh.

3. As David is currently headed off the prison, bankrupt, and currently about to watch his rap name get auctioned off to the highest bidder, I wonder, as he recollects on all the lost millions, opportunities, and businesses he had access to, if he will finally admit that, yea, He was wrong…
